How the Comet 3I/ATLAS live tracker works
3I/ATLAS is an interstellar comet on a hyperbolic, unbound path through the solar system. This page requests its latest available JPL Horizons solution, calculates its current Earth and Sun distances, heliocentric speed, Earth range rate, one-way light time, and J2000 right ascension and declination, then refreshes the on-screen position every second.
Why the position is called a calculated ephemeris
A comet does not broadcast a GPS-like live location. Astronomers determine its orbit from observations and use that orbit to predict where the object is at a given time. For that reason this tracker labels the values as a JPL Horizons calculated ephemeris rather than direct telemetry.
