The Meteor Shower Tracker uses a curated calendar of major annual showers and combines it with your location, local radiant height, Moon illumination and darkness conditions. It is designed to answer two practical questions: which shower is active, and how favorable is your sky likely to be around the peak?
How to interpret meteor shower rates
The listed ZHR, or zenithal hourly rate, is an ideal maximum used to compare shower activity. It is not a promise that you will personally count that many meteors. Real observed rates depend on radiant altitude, sky darkness, Moon brightness, cloud, light pollution and how much of the sky you can see.
Why radiant height and Moon illumination matter
A shower’s radiant is the point in the sky from which its meteors appear to diverge. When the radiant is low, fewer shower meteors are visible from your location. A bright Moon can further reduce the number of faint meteors you see, which is why the tracker includes local radiant and lunar context instead of showing only a calendar date.
How to watch a meteor shower
Choose a dark, open location, allow your eyes time to adapt, and look across a broad area of sky rather than staring directly at the radiant. NASA’s Meteor Showers guide explains why annual showers occur as Earth crosses debris streams left by comets and, in some cases, asteroids.
